4 year olds—the Pre-School Stage

Once your child is four, we will start working towards preparing them for school. You will still receive your grant from Halton Council entitling you to 5 sessions per week each of 2½ hours. Taking a new theme each four weeks, the children will continue to work through the Early Learning Goals as detailed previously with the following additional objectives.

Language and Literacy

  • To write their own name and recognise others
  • To know that print is read from left to right
  • To remember and retell stories in the correct order
  • To link sounds to letters, naming and sounding the alphabet
  • To interact verbally with others, and wait for their turn in discussions
  • To understand elements of stories, the main characters, the ending, the moral

Mathematics

  • To say and use number names confidently to 5
  • To count and know the number shapes to 10
  • To be able to order, sequence and group objects
  • To recreate patterns
  • To use and understand mathematics phrases such as one more, two less

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

  • To build a predetermined shape with a range materials
  • To understand about their own culture and those of other people
  • To explore their own feelings and those of other people
  • To understand the concept of the passage of time, that certain events happened a long time ago, other events are recent
  • To understand that some objects are living
  • To look at their immediate environment and broader geography

Physical Development

  • To use large and small climbing equipment with confidence
  • To handle tools, objects, construction and malleable materials in safety
  • To travel around under and over objects with confidence
  • To balance and coordinate their bodies on different equipment

Creative Development

  • To explore art and craft activities in both 2 and 3 dimension
  • To pre-plan art and craft activities
  • To appreciate simple beats and rhythms
  • To use their imagination during role play activities
  • To use a range of materials to make musical instruments
  • To be confident in using different materials in art and craft activities

Personal and Social Development

  • To select and use activities and resources independently
  • To initiate and share ideas with the group
  • To share experiences and enjoy listening to the experiences of others
  • To dress independently—(coat on, socks and shoes on)
  • To manage with increasing confidence their own personal hygiene
  • To maintain attention, concentrate and sit quietly if asked
  • To try new activities and new situations with confidence
